Projects

The interns and community service pharmacists participated: in various projects this year. It included:

  • waiting time at casualty pharmacy
  • availability, number & cost of the EDL medication
  • customer satisfaction
  • monitoring of leave
  • ward services
  • the development of the master makes card and batch document

The ICU pharmacist is also involved in a lot of multinational research work, pharmacokinetic studies and a master project on glutamine-supplemented TPN.

Future Plans

  • A new, properly planned pharmacy!
  • Implementing proper drug supply management in the wards
  • Computerization of the pharmacy should happen as soon as possible

Statistics

On a monthly basis:

  • 25'000 out-patients visit the pharmacy
  • 10'000 bedletters are re-viewed and dispensed
  • 2'000 discharged prescriptions are issued

Using Gauteng norms for pharmacists with DPE's, as determined by the Gauteng pharmacist form, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital needs 56 Full time pharmacists - currently 18 posts are filled.

Appointments and Resignations

  • Dr Hermien Gous was appointed Chief Pharmacist in April 2001. (Our sincere congratulations. We would like to wish her all the success possible - Ed.)
  • Nine community service pharmacists joined the service in January 2001. It made a big difference since there were only 13 pharmacists last year.
  • Two assistants finished the basic level pharmacist assistant course and received their certificates.
  • Five pharmacists and five assistants resigned.
  • One of the pharmacy assistants passed away and two assistants were suspended for alleged theft.

Continuing Education

The pharmacists are given many opportunities to attend workshops and seminars. The assistants are involved in adult based education and training (ABET).
