St John Eye HospitalHead: Dr G. McLarenIntroductionSt John Eye Hospital has been very busy this year. Our Saturday cataract surgery project has continued and is helping to reduce the cataract backlog in the Province. Staff MattersDoctors Pillay, Williams, Thomson, Mthembu and Farber all passed the final fellowship exams in the last year. Dr Patrick left us at the end of 2000 and will return as a specialist in January 2002. He has done a fellowship year at Bristol Eye Hospital in England. AchievementsWe were awarded the Impumelelo Innovation Award (finalist) at the end of last year for our cataract project which runs on Saturday mornings. InnovationsWe have established a subspecialty clinic at St John and now provide more focused and expert care for our retinal, glaucoma, uveitis, orbital/oculoplastic corneal and paediatric patients. This also improves our ability to train our Registrars. We are proud to announce the arrival of two new lasers, an optic disc analyser, a digital imaging system, a hand held autorefractor and a new sophisticated microscope for complicated retinal surgery. We are excited about the year ahead and look forward to improving the quality of care we provide for our patients. Chief Professional Nurse N Damba retired at the end of 2000 and is sorely missed. Despite the shortage of nursing staff, morale is still positive and the staff rendering a high standard of nursing care. Two of our staff members completed the Diploma in Opthalmic Nursing in February, namely Srs Mirriam Motloung and Lindiwe Mncwabe, and we are happy to have them back.
